Terri Hoffman was an American woman who gained notoriety for her involvement in a religious cult known as Conscious Development of Body, Mind, and Soul (CDBMS). Hoffman founded the group in the 1980s in Dallas, Texas and claimed to be a psychic, healer, and spiritual leader.
Under Hoffman's leadership, the group grew to over 100 members and practiced a combination of New Age beliefs, Christian teachings, and psychic consultations. Members were encouraged to cut ties with their families and give all of their possessions and money to the group.
Hoffman's control over her followers became increasingly manipulative and abusive, with reports of physical and psychological abuse, forced labor, and financial exploitation. In 1988, two former members of the group filed a lawsuit against Hoffman, accusing her of brainwashing and defrauding them.
In 1990, Hoffman was charged with assault after physically attacking a former member who had left the group. She was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison, but only served three years before being released on parole.
After her release, Hoffman continued to lead the CDBMS cult until her death in 1995. The group disbanded shortly after her passing, but the effects of her manipulative and abusive behaviors left a lasting impact on her followers and their families.
